about

This song was inspired by a post Daphne Mae put on her Facebook account. I wrote the music and lyrics on 29th and 30th June 2021 and 10 November 2022. There are different types and degrees of poverty but the end result is much the same with the poor having limited access to education, health and basic needs such as food and water. For some this is complicated by war and extreme climate change impact. The song is basically saying ‘before you whinge about anything ask yourself do I have a roof over my head, 3 regular meals each day, children that go to school and have access to affordable health care etc? because there are many people around the world who cannot say yes to any of these things and whose concerns are life and death ones, not knowing how long water will be available, where their next meal is coming from and wondering if their children will ever have an education at all. Daphne’s vocals captured the intensity I wanted beautifully, with her passionate and emotional delivery.

lyrics

POVERTY QUEUE
Words and Music by Bruce Neilsen

You think life is hard
In your comfortable bed
You’ve got silly thoughts
Running round in your head

There’s always someone
Who’d like to be you
There’s an endless line
In the poverty queue

In the poverty queue
In the poverty queue

In the poverty queue
There could be a you or a me
Waiting forever
No shining sun to see

In the poverty queue
There could be a you or a me
Waiting forever
No shining sun to see

There’s people without beds
Food, clothing and toys
Some starving to death
They don’t have a choice

Don’t think a second about them
Just complain instead
You’ve got silly thoughts
Going round in your head

In the poverty queue
In the poverty queue

In the poverty queue
There are degrees of misery
Exploited and broken
How I wish you could see

In the poverty queue
There are degrees of misery
Exploited and broken
How I wish you could see

When you say your life
Could be far better too
There are many who want
To swap places with you

But I doubt you would think
That far ahead
Do you seriously think
You’d rather be dead

When there’s so many people
Dodging bullets instead
You’re whining and moaning
In your comfortable bed

In the poverty queue
There’s too many to count
Too many problems
Too hard to surmount

In the poverty queue
There could be a you or a me
Waiting forever
No shining sun to see

In the poverty queue
There could be a you or a me
Waiting forever
No shining sun to see

In the poverty queue
The poverty queue
The poverty queue
The poverty queue
Waiting
Just waiting
Just waiting
In the poverty queue
